George Soros, towering intellect
George Soros is that rare animal, a capitalist with a conscience. He's also one of the towering intellects of the anti-globalization and anti-Bush movement, as demonstrated in this essay in the Atlantic Monthly, where he skewers the foreign policy of the Bush administration with exquisite elegance. The aim of terrorism is to terrorize, and the attack of September 11 fully accomplished this objective. I try to avoid contact with Americans, but from what I hear they're pretty terrified these days. Osama bin Laden certainly accomplished his objective - to stick a pin in the balloon of American arrogance, and force every single American to walk around in fear of his next attack. The effect has been increased by skyhigh levels of unemployment, and a rate of production tumbling downwards faster than the president's approval ratings. This foreign policy is part of a comprehensive ideology customarily referred to as neoconservatism, though I prefer to describe it as a crude form of social Darwinism. I call it crude because it ignores the role of cooperation in the survival of the fittest, and puts all the emphasis on competition. I hadn't thought about neoconservatism as a form of social Darwinism before, but now that Soros mentions it, I realize that the connection is obvious. Social Darwinism is about how we shouldn't help the poor because poverty is caused by stupidity, stupidity is hereditary, and by helping them we encourage their poor genes to spread - an ideology that falls on the dubious connection between genes and intelligence. As modern sociology points out, IQ is a cultural artifact, created specifically to justify Western racism. In the same way, neoconservatism is based on the supposed superiority of the American people, which, following pseudo-Darwinian logic, means that they are genetically superior, and can do whatever they like to anyone. It follows that bombing Iraq back to the stoneage was nothing more than to do them - and humanity - a service. Instituting a puppet regime and stealing their oil is also "justified". For what use would subhumans have of independence and wealth? The communist alternative to this proto-fascist ideology is a more positive view of humanity. We believe that all humans are born equal, and that any difference that may exist is caused by the Americans - the aristocracy of the world. The Iraqis were doing perfectly fine before the Americans came and bombed their government, stole their oil, and put a stop to their attempt to create an Arab counterweight to American imperialism. We believe they may do perfectly fine once again, if the American just leave them the hell alone. Soros may not be a communist, but he's certainly caught onto the racist undertones of the American "war" "on" "terrorism". In effect, the doctrine establishes two classes of sovereignty: the sovereignty of the United States, which takes precedence over international treaties and obligations; and the sovereignty of all other states, which is subject to the will of the United States. This is reminiscent of George Orwell's Animal Farm: all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. The Bush administration is Orwellian in more ways than one. The Patriot Act has an Orwellian name, an Orwellian content, and was proposed by the extremely Orwellian John Ashcroft. Bush himself frequently employs doublespeak slogans like "terrorism is evil", and doublethink like his equation of capitalism with liberty. And as a lying warmonger in total control of the hearts and minds of his people, (as demonstrated by the disturbing lack of criticism of him in the media), he is of course the ultimate Big Brother. George Soros adds another Orwellian aspect to Bush - his hypocritical insistence on the sovereignity of the United States. The concept of national sovereignity is of course "all animals are equal.." in a different form. Animal Farm, like 1984, has often been abused by the anti-Communists, but it's real message is about the inherent hypocrisy of capitalism and nationalism. When some laws apply to citizens, and other laws to foreigners, what is that but an implication that "some animals are more equal than others", the axiom of social Darwinist neoconservatism? And the only form of government to escape this hypocrisy is international communism - the ultimate anti-Orwellian concept, as he himself was well aware of. It is difficult to think of a recent military operation that has gone so wrong [as the Iraq war]. Our soldiers have been forced to do police duty in combat gear, and they continue to be killed. We have put at risk not only our soldiers' lives but the combat effectiveness of our armed forces. Their morale is impaired, and we are no longer in a position to properly project our power. This may actually be a good thing, both because it continues the painful but necessary project of teaching the Americans about humility, (like the Germans were taught it in 1945), and because it opens up some interesting possibilities. Canada, for instance, has been an open critic of the Bush administration. If they were to attack the US now that its combat effectiveness has been reduced, they would do the world a big service. The Americans would never expect it. In their arrogance they have completely neglected the growing rage of their most proximate victims to the north, whose indiginous culture has been completely overrun by Hollywood and McDonalds. American power, as Soros puts it, is a bubble, or as other observers have put it, like that of a paper tiger. Let's see them try to project their "power" in their own country for a change! My bet: The Canadian forces will be met by cheering crowds and children waving Canadian flags, at least in the more enlightened provinces, and will only face resistance in the more backwards middle American triangle. A recent Council on Foreign Relations publication sketches out three alternative national-security strategies. The first calls for the pursuit of American supremacy through the Bush doctrine of pre-emptive military action. It is advocated by neoconservatives. The second seeks the continuation of our earlier policy of deterrence and containment. It is advocated by Colin Powell and other moderates, who may be associated with either political party. The third would have the United States lead a cooperative effort to improve the world by engaging in preventive actions of a constructive character. It is not advocated by any group of significance, although President Bush pays lip service to it. That is the policy I stand for. .. I agree. A preventive action of a constructive and affirmative nature is exactly what the world needs. No more meaningless words. It's time for the progressive forces of the world to act preventively in a constructive and affirmative way. George Soros will of course have to be reeducated when the revolution comes, but I suspect his stay in the purgatory will be very short. He already has the profoundity and clarity of thought required of a progressive intellectual. It's our loss that there aren't more people like him in the US.
