This is the help for the sunSITE WAIS-mail gateway.
The gateway software was written by Jonny Goldman (jonathan@think.com)
of Thinking Machines.
WAIS is a protocol and a collection of tools for querying remote databases
over a network.
WAIS Mail is a very primitive tool for use as a gateway between WAIS and
MAIL systems.
For more information on WAIS search the "wais-docs" source,
or contact wais-help@quake.think.com.
The list of commands accepted by the server is:

help
returns this file.
maxres
set the maximum number of results returned to "number". You should set
the maximum number of results before you issue a "search" command.
search [|" ..."] {keywords...}
is a source name as found in the directory of servers
(with or without the .src ending!). When enclosed in double-quotes,
this is interpreted as a search of multiple sources.
{keywords...} are the words you would normally type into a query.
You may specify multiple search requests.
If you don't know what sources you can search, just try anything. If the
source name is not recognised, you'll get a list of sources. The
directory-of-servers is a special source you can search that will tell you
more about sources. And you can always ask a source for "help".
retrieve
DOCID is a DocID as returned by a search above. It's a rather ugly
thing, so don't mess with it (it's actually just the DocID wais
retrieve can handle). You may specify multiple retrieval requests.
**** Important note:****
1. Be sure to separate DocID's with a blank line.
2. If you're not sure about your mailer (or editor), check the DocID
against the docid in the result. DocID's must be exactly the same,
including any spaces. Most "Bad DocID" errors are the result of
lost spaces in transmission.
DocID:
Same as above. This is for ease-of-use with Results returned from
searches. You can just "Reply" to the mail to retrieve results (be
sure there is only whitespace between the beginning of the line an the
DocID keyword).
Note for those of you with dumb mailers that insist on 80 character lines:
I've made WAISMail smart enough to handle DocID's that span multiple
lines. Don't insert any extra spaces into the DocID (just newlines), and
****be sure to separate DocID's with a blank line****.
Another note about DocID's returned by catalogs: You can use these, but
you have to be sure to append the ":database@host:port" information onto
the end. This information can be found in the DocID you used to retrieve
the catalog.
You can retrieve non-text documents as well as text. If the document is
of TYPE "TEXT" or "WSRC" you will get the result directly. Other types
will be UUENCODED.
like
This command sets a relevant document. It has the same syntax as the
retrieve (or DocID:) command, but different effects. Instead, it
sets a relevant document for a search. You may specify multiple "like"
documents, separated by blank lines (but remember: the document must
come from the same server you are searching!). "like" commands must
precede the corresponding "search" command, and all "like" documents are
cleared between searches.
