Remember, remember 11 September; Murderous monsters in flight; Reject their dark game; And let Liberty's flame; Burn prouder and ever more bright
- Geoffrey Barto

"Bjørn Stærks hyklerske dobbeltmoral er til å spy av. Under det syltynne fernisset av redelighet sitter han klar med en vulkan av diagnoser han kan klistre på annerledes tenkende mennesker når han etter beste evne har spilt sine kort. Jeg tror han har forregnet seg. Det blir ikke noe hyggelig under sharia selv om han har slikket de nye herskernes støvlesnuter."

Shabana Rehman: A Jihad of Laughter: [I linked earlier to a reply to her critics by stand-up and lift-up comedian Shabana Rehman, who was roundly condemned of rudeness and Islamophobia after violating the personal space of our dear Mullah Krekar. I've asked for permission to translate [...]

Shabana Rehman: The Migration of the Heart: [This is the second of two texts by Shabana Rehman, an opening speech at the 2004 Bergen International Festival, translated with permission from the original Norwegian at document.no. The first is here. -bs] The Migration of the Heart Opening speech [...]

What did Krohn Devold know ..: .. and when did she know it? Amnesty Norway claims that "it would be very surprising" if Norwegian soldiers in Iraq were unaware of American and British prisoner abuse, and based on this non-accusation accusation Aftenposten demands that Defense Minister [...]

Don't pull these guys out of Iraq: So what do our soldiers in Iraq think about their mission and their withdrawal next month? I've been meaning to link to this online Q&A a few weeks ago, between readers of VG and some of the Norwegians stationed near [...]

Norway's first war on terror casualty: .. and I'm back, and so are the newspapers. Coincidence? Not really. A journalist strike is a good excuse to drop out from the news for a while, and when there's noone to write about stuff, you start to believe [...]

Strike update: It's getting dull in the stores. Whole sections are empty: No cheese of any kind, almost no frozen food - I actually bought the last package of brown cheese in one store, and the last package of frozen lasagne in [...]

Abu Ghraib - This is what we are: There's something very typically Western about the Abu Ghraib torture scandal, (please nobody call it digicamgate). This is us, all of it. This is what we are as a culture: Occasionally sadistic, occasionally heroic, full of ass-covering politicians, short-sighted media, [...]

Big dumb strike of the year: It's May, and as reliably as the spring and the public holidays, there's a dumb strike going on. At times like this I feel out of touch with my own society. I don't, usually, not even at times of political [...]

EU enlargement - Norway left behind?: As a Norwegian, it's hard not to feel left out as much of Eastern Europe joins Western Europe as members of the European Union. The Ode to Joy playing while 25 flags are raised together for the first time - [...]

Another Norwegian word the English language should adopt: utepils.

I know I plug Babylon 5 every time I get a new DVD set, but - damn season 4 is good. One episode stood out in particular on this viewing: The Illusion of Truth, which features a 23rd century version of that NRK sleazebag. Intersections in Real Time is another strikingly relevant episode, dealing with mostly non-physical torture.

Matt Welch: "Claiming that the U.S. media is waging a conscious campaign to make America lose and that it has the power to pull it off smacks not only of delusion, but a kind of desperation as well." Also read this column on journalism and free speech.

Fredrik Norman was on NRK again yesterday, in a debate on Abu Ghraib. Nice!

The transport worker strike is over. The strikers got their usual wage increases, but abandoned their mad and possibly illegal demand of being paid more than non-unionized employees. I consider that a victory.

M. V. Lee Badge takes on Stanley Kurtz' bogus gay-Scandinavian- war-on-marriage argument: "Letting gay couples say 'I do' does not lead to heterosexuals saying 'I don't.'"

This isn't funny any more. The brewers just went on strike. That's five major strikes at the same time. Beer is expected to run out within days.

Season one of magician/comedian couple Penn and Teller's Bullshit, a junk science debunk show, is now on DVD. Entertaining, and educational - just remember to apply the same critical skills to P&T as they do to environmentalists, anti-smokers, creationists, mediums, self-help experts etc. Skepticism is a state of mind, not a particular point of view.

It's hard to know what the situation in Iraq is really like, but it's time for everyone to see through the "they're botching it" meme.

George Galloway's auto-biography looks like it could have been written by my dormant alter-ego Comrade Medvedsilnyn. Really. (Via Jan Haugland.)

What little I've read of linguistics has held Noam Chomsky in high regard. Fellow linguist Marc Miyake calls him a junk scientist and asks where the hard evidence is. Whoever is right, asking for evidence is always appropriate, and always demands a reply. (Via Steven Den Beste.)

A nation of whiners. Hotel workers and journalists have gone on strike, shutting down major hotels and newspapers. Memo to tourists: Never visit Norway in May. (Or do, but bring toilet paper and a tent.)

Krekar's complaint against Shabana Rehman has been dismissed by the police. No surprise there. Now how about that civil suit?
